Hello, Aljam here. Today I am going to teach you the basics of ROM hacking. First, before we begin, I would like to tell you a few terms you should know.
ROM - A ROM is basically a game cartridge that is dumped onto the computer and played through an emulator
Emulator - An emulator is a program that is used to play video games on the computer. There are tons of emulators.
IPS Patch - An IPS patch is a file that is used with a program called Lunar IPS. We use the patches to give out demos or ROM Bases since ROM distribution is illegal.
ROM Base - A ROM base is a ROM with stuff already inserted inserted to give a ROM hacker a head start.
ROM Hacker - Person who hacks ROMs.
Hack - An edited game, using the original game's base engine.
Sprite - A sprite is a collaboration of pixels used to create an image. Sprites almost always uses a limited amount of colours. In pokemon, sprites use dithering.
Dithering - A style of shading that is used to show front and back
Palette - Palettes are a certain amount colours you have to work with.
Map - A map is the main area the game is played. A map is made up of blocks.
Block - A block is an object in the game that is used to make maps. Blocks can be edited in a variety of ways. One of the best ways to do so, is by changing the tiles.
Tile - A tile is an 8 x 8 Image that can be inserted into a ROM to change graphics. Tiles are always inserted in a tileset.
Tileset - A tileset is a collaboration of tiles.
Script - A script is an event in the game. A script is used to show the actions in text. Every script is different, each doing different things in the game, having a different offset.
Offset - An offset is a place in the ROM where information stored.
If I forgot a couple of definitions, or if I explained the words wrong, please reply below.
